SOFTENING OF LIGHT pg 135 - 2 pics

The first image is with the naked bulb. The difference seems to be that the naked bulb version is more contrasty than the soft box diffused version. Also, the transition to shadow detail is also harsher in the first naked bulb version.

The softbox version also seem to have better colour 
saturation as well as being a softer look overall.

I think the soft box version is more pleasing / softer  on the eye and possibly more attractive. The naked bulb version is harsh and more dramatic.

The softbox version is my preferred.
